What Separates a £2,500 Sauna From an £8,000 Sauna (Installed, Not Sticker)

Two sauna listings, thousands of pounds apart, spec sheets that look identical. Tier by tier, this is what the extra money buys.

  • Family-run since 2021
  • 100% built in Europe, where sauna was born
  • Every price on our website, VAT and import duty included
  • Harvia heaters
  • Delivered to mainland Great Britain

Free, by phone. This is the call to make before you have chosen a model, not after. Both of you are welcome.

PlusLife Max Traditional 2.0 outdoor sauna: rounded-square timber cabin with a full tinted-glass front, centred glass door, black shingle roof and timber cradle feet
Max Traditional 2.0, handcrafted and 100% built in Europe, where sauna was born. From £8,053.

It usually starts with a modest budget. By the time the shortlist is real, the number has nearly doubled, and the confidence has gone the other way. One buyer put the whole arc in one line on a sauna forum: "Budget started low, until this sub put me off the lower priced kits."

What stalls the order is rarely the price. It is the sense that the listings are holding something back, and they usually are: most go quiet on the same six lines, and the extra money lives exactly there. This page walks all six: the £2,500 tier, the £8,000 tier, and our own Max Traditional 2.0.

Then the things no spec sheet carries: the company behind the warranty, heater sizing, and where it goes.

The £8,000 sauna is not better because it costs more. It is better only if the spec sheet proves it.

01

Heater brand, model and kW

The engine of the build, and the clearest tell: a seller who knows what is in the box names it.

The £2,500 tier, usually

"Stainless steel heater included." No brand, no model, no kW, and no obvious part to source when an element goes.

The £8,000 tier, at minimum

A named brand and a kW figure is table stakes at this tier. The money should buy the pairing: a premium heater sized to the cabin and the climate, with parts you can source in year six.

Max Traditional 2.0, in writing

We partner with Harvia, the biggest sauna heater manufacturer in the world. Harvia is a publicly listed company, with options based on your usage and sauna size. On the call, the heater is matched to your cabin and your climate before you pay anything.

  • Harvia heaters
  • Options by usage and size
  • Sized on the call
02

Walls, in millimetres

Wall mass holds temperature against a winter wind. It is the first corner cut, because you cannot see it in a photo.

The £2,500 tier, usually

Unlisted. Thin panelling over a frame is common here; owners describe kits that struggle to hold heat in winter, then move once weather gets into the boards.

The £8,000 tier, at minimum

A number in millimetres you can hold a tape measure against, and timber mass designed to last decades, not seasons. For context, 38 mm is standard on a number of outdoor cabins.

Premium traditional line, in writing

42mm walls, and the why: thicker walls mean better insulation, faster heat-up and a better sauna experience. Compare that against any listing: ours is printed on the product page, so you can hold us to it.

  • 42mm walls, better insulation
  • Faster heat-up
  • Printed on the product page
03

Timber, named per model

Outside, the timber lives through months of rain, frost and damp. Inside, it takes high heat most evenings. The wrong species warps with the first and cracks with the second.

The £2,500 tier, usually

Unspecified softwood. Owners describe warping, surface breakdown, and glue or varnish smells that have no place in a hot room.

The £8,000 tier, at minimum

A named species, treated for moisture stability, per model rather than once for the catalogue.

Max Traditional 2.0, in writing

Timbers are Thermo-Aspen and Thermo-Pine, premium species thermo-treated for harsh climates, a wet British winter included. Benches in Aspen or Alder, knotless and smooth so you do not get burnt.

  • Benches in Aspen or Alder
  • Knotless and smooth
04

Vents and bench

The lines almost nobody publishes, and the ones that decide whether the room feels right. One couple: "Only 2 of us, but like the idea of space to stretch out and adding a guest or two on occasion."

The £2,500 tier, usually

No vent named. One bench, depth unstated. Fine for a photo; less fine for two people, twenty minutes, most evenings.

The £8,000 tier, at minimum

A vent you can see and adjust, and bench dimensions stated, so two can stretch out.

Max Traditional 2.0, in writing

Round timber vent, and slatted benches with a backrest rail. Bench heights are set for proper loyly, so the whole cabin is heated: loyly is the Finnish word for a sauna's heat and steam, and proper heat distribution is the plain-terms version. Room for two plus a guest is a sizing question for the call.

  • Round timber vent
  • Backrest rail
  • Set for proper loyly
05

Warranty per model, in writing

Warranty length says how much a company believes its own build.

The £2,500 tier, usually

Short, vague, or quoted only in a chat window. Owners report sellers going quiet once a claim is lodged, which makes the number irrelevant.

The £8,000 tier, at minimum

Multi-year terms in writing, per model, from a company you can still reach in year three.

Max Traditional 2.0, in writing

Five years residential on the Max Traditional 2.0 cabin, the same term as the Mini 2.0 and the Meridian Barrel. You can read each model's term on our warranty page before you order, and the Consumer Rights Act 2015 still protects you on top of it.

If a seller cannot put a warranty term in an email, that is your answer about the seller. Who answers it in year four? Just after the six lines.

  • 5 yr on the cabin
  • Mini 2.0 and Meridian too
  • Published before you order
06

Where it is built

The quiet suspicion is that most saunas sold here are the same unit with a different logo. Ask any brand which factory builds it, and in which country.

The £2,500 tier, usually

"Imported" or "European style", no country named. Not always a bad sauna. Always an unanswered question.

The £8,000 tier, at minimum

Manufactured in Europe, where sauna was born, by a factory the people selling it have stood in.

Max Traditional 2.0, in writing

All our saunas are 100% built in Europe, where sauna was born, and that includes the Arc, Cove and Meridian barrels. The certificate of origin is yours on request.

Who is on the other end of the warranty in year four

The failure stories on the forums are not only about cheap kits; plenty are about premium brands, and the pattern is the same: the sauna was fine, the company was not. Checkable facts, not adjectives:

  • Family-run since 2021. A husband-and-wife team, named on the About page. Not a marketplace listing.
  • The founders still use the saunas they sell, daily.
  • Support on UK hours. A UK phone line and a .co.uk email address, weekdays from 9am to 5pm UK time.
  • The factory is somewhere they go. The founder films the range where it is built, in Europe.
  • A covered fault costs you nothing to put right. Diagnosis starts from your photos and video; if that does not solve it, an engineer comes out or a replacement part is sent, with no charge for parts, labour, carriage or call-out.

"Our sauna sessions are where we slow down and talk about everything from business to life."

The founders, husband and wife.
PlusLife Mini Traditional 2.0 outdoor sauna: compact timber cabin with a tinted-glass door, black shingle roof and timber cradle feet
Mini Traditional 2.0, from £6,442. A smaller cabin, the same sizing question.

Which heater, how many kW, and will it hit temperature on a January night

The short answer

Harvia heaters, with options based on your usage and sauna size. Sizing is answered on the call, and if the smaller heater is right for your site we will say so.

The number that matters is the pairing: kilowatts against cabin volume, then your climate. A heater that suits a mild spring evening works harder on a frosty January night.

An outdoor cabin on a cold or exposed site wants the larger heater option, with margin. Getting it wrong is not dangerous; it is a sauna that never quite gets there in the month you want it most.

How long does it take to heat up? 20 minutes to an hour on average, depending on the temperature you want. A heater sized with margin sits at the short end of that range, even in January.

Bring your postcode and where the cabin will sit, and find out what supply your home has: some heaters need a three phase supply, and most UK homes only have single phase. Sizing is settled before you pay anything.

Decking, slab or side path: where it goes, and how it looks there

One of you is reading the spec sheet. One of you is out in the garden with a tape measure. This part is for the tape measure.

Where it sits

Three questions come before delivery day: what it sits on, how close to the house or fence it can go, and how the crate gets from the kerb to the spot. A side path decides more than most people expect: measure the gate, count the steps, check the slope and look up for anything overhead.

Site check

Dimensions and weights are on each product page, with what the base needs; we read them against your space on the call. Send a photo and we will tell you what fits. Whether the spot needs planning permission or building control approval is yours to check with your local authority before it arrives.

How it looks

Not a render. The Max Traditional 2.0 in the photo is the product as sold: full tinted-glass front, black shingle roof, timber cradle feet.

If you would rather a barrel, the Cove Barrel (from £5,636) is the same traditional build in barrel form; the choice is mostly the look in your garden and the space you have.

What "installed" actually adds, and why the electrician is a separate line

The short answer

Delivery comes to the kerb and is priced at checkout. Assembly, the base and the electrical connection sit outside the sauna price, and your electrician's quote is one you can have in hand before you order.

Four things sit between the sticker and the first session: delivery, assembly, the base, and the electrical connection. Delivery brings the crate to the kerb, anywhere on mainland Great Britain, and if checkout cannot price your postcode, we agree a fixed delivery figure with you in writing before your order is accepted. Assembly is not in the price unless it has been quoted separately, in writing, and we may recommend assembly partners. The base is yours: a level, load-bearing slab or solid decking that can carry the cabin, sorted before delivery day. The connection is your electrician's.

The electrician. The heater runs on its own dedicated circuit with RCD protection, and connecting it is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations, so it is done by a registered electrician, one on a competent person scheme such as NICEIC or NAPIT, who works to BS 7671 and leaves you a certificate to keep. The supply your model needs is printed on its product page, so your electrician can price the job before you choose. Electrical costs are not on the website because they vary by property. If you would like a name, we may recommend an electrician, with the contract for the work between you and them; if you already have a sparky, they can speak directly to our team.

Checkout shows the full delivery charge, and it will not rise after you order.

The order these things happen in

  1. Your free expert consultation. Bring your postcode, the spot in the garden and the route to it from the kerb, and whichever models you are circling. Ours or anyone else's.
  2. You leave with three answers. Which heater suits your cabin, the supply it needs, and the warranty term for your model.
  3. Your sparky quotes off that requirement. The step that usually lands late and stalls a project lands before you choose. Book the work itself for after the sauna has been delivered and checked.
  4. Now there is one number. Sauna, delivery, assembly, base and electrical, visible together. Decide against that.

Most people don't wake up one morning and decide to buy a sauna. It takes weeks, sometimes months, of research and discussion with your family. The honest timing argument is sequencing: every sauna is built for you after you order, to the configuration you choose, so settle the heater and the supply before the order goes in.

Two owners, quoted as written

Both name the model and describe the build, the install and the use in their own words. More reviews sit on the product pages.

"I bought the Max 2.0… The team at PlusLife were patient while I got the site ready, which I appreciated and delivery was smooth once we were set up. I have been in it every day since - the build quality is excellent and it does exactly what I wanted. Two of my mates have already called to order their own. Highly recommend."

Liam H., Max 2.0 owner. PlusLife product-page review.

"We purchased the Plus Life Outdoor mini 2.0 traditional. A great project to self build and install. Not absolutely straight forward but with patience and (some) common sense/tradie skills I got there with the assistance of great customer service when I required it. Now we can relax in style…"

Neil D., Mini 2.0 owner. PlusLife product-page review, excerpt.

One honest caveat: if it would genuinely get used only a handful of times a season, a sauna might not be for you yet.

The questions that come next

Our saunas are handcrafted and 100% built in Europe, where sauna was born. That covers every model in our range, cabins and barrels alike, and a certificate of origin is available on request.

If you can, yes, and together. Sitting in one first is the cheapest research you will do: a friend's sauna, a spa, or a gym day pass. Twenty minutes on a bench tells you more about the heat than any listing, and on the call we match what you both felt to a model.

A traditional sauna is a dry room used wet, so airflow and drying out afterwards are most of the answer. Timber care is a schedule, not a project: exterior oil every 12 months, sooner on an exposed or south-facing spot, and sealer for the interior. Exterior oil is and interior sealer is . Keeping up the oiling also keeps the timber cover of your warranty in place. Indoor and garage installs carry model-specific requirements; we read the product-page dimensions against your space on the call.

That one is not a fight worth having: a traditional sauna gives you both. Every traditional sauna can be optioned with the Wi-Fi controller (a premium applies) or comes with built-in controls, depending on the heater you pick; prices are on the website and confirmed on the call. Harvia is behind the app: schedule the sauna before you leave, it learns your cabin's heat-up time, and your phone tells you when it is ready. Bring the disagreement to the call. Both of you.

Every price is on our website. When something is on sale, a sale price should have a reason you can hear out loud, and you are welcome to ask for ours. If you are holding a written quote for another European-built sauna, bring it to the call and we will go through it line by line, on the same six lines.

A premium, handcrafted cabin, 100% built in Europe, where sauna was born, from materials designed to last decades, not seasons. Walls 42mm thick, for better insulation and a faster heat-up. Thermo-Aspen and Thermo-Pine, treated to take a wet British winter, and knotless Aspen or Alder benches set at the heights that give proper loyly through the whole cabin. A Harvia heater matched to your usage and sauna size.

A five-year cabin warranty on the Max 2.0, and on the Mini 2.0 and Meridian Barrel too. And a price that arrives delivered duty paid, with PlusLife as importer of record, so no import duty, import VAT or customs charge is waiting for you on delivery.

Typically 6 to 10 weeks from order to delivery, because each sauna is built for you after you order; your order confirmation gives the estimate for yours. Use the wait to get the base ready and the route from the kerb clear.

Twenty minutes, most evenings, with the rest of the world outside the door

Ask people who own a home sauna what they actually got, and the heater model rarely comes up. What comes up is the evening: the two of you in a hot room at the bottom of the garden, nothing pinging, nowhere to be for twenty minutes. The health case is real and decades deep: research including the well-known Finnish studies points to physical and mental benefits from regular sauna use, year-round. Follow it with a cold plunge and the hot-cold contrast is instant.

The question underneath a purchase this size is not whether the sauna is good; it is whether you will use it. What ends a sauna habit is friction, and most of that friction belongs to someone else's sauna: the drive, the car park, the gym timer, the shared bench. At home the list is twenty steps and a door, and the Wi-Fi controller closes most of the rest: the heat is waiting when you get home. The difference between a sauna you use most evenings and one you use on Sundays is mostly that.

Neil, above, put it in five words: "Now we can relax in style." Liam has been in his every day since delivery, and two of his mates have already ordered their own. That is the return on the six lines. The call is where the number gets real.

Bring us your checklist. Leave with the number.

Ask us the six lines directly, then post them to the forum anyway. Phone-based, site-specific, both of you welcome. Book before you settle on a model.
